WASHINGTON, DC (JANUARY 13TH) U.S. Rep. John L Mica (FL-7) introduced today legislation that establishes the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration Commission to plan and execute programs and activities to commemorate the 450th Anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine, Florida, in 1665. Mica secured support and cosponsorship of all twenty-five Florida House Democrats and Republicans for the measure. The Commission will plan and host many activities in 2015 celebrating St. Augustine's founding by coordinating with federal, state and local entities to ensure the city's legacy of human fortitude and perseverance remains an important part of our nation's great story.

Congressman Mica said, "St. Augustine, Florida, our nation's oldest settlement, will benefit by this 450th Celebration. This commission will assist us in increasing the historic profile of our community, increase tourism and provide a boost to the local economy."

Mica added, "I believe we can pass this legislation early this year the agreement reached last week by Senator Martinez to include the bill's provision in S. 22, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, that may reach the House floor as soon as next week."

Representative Mica will continue to work with the Commission and the local St. Augustine community to secure any needed federal assistance.
